ENTSOG work is continuing to evolve: from designing the secondary legislation and fulfilment of conferred regulatory tasks, monitoring the effects of the agreed outcomes through to responding to future challenges and building on achieved results. While its focus remains on monitoring Network Code implementation, ENTSOG future activities will also include assessing the progress of the functionality of the European gas markets and looking at longer term horizons for European Scenarios.
The future role of gas in a low carbon economy needs to be reflected in the gas market design. The gas market design should enable a higher integration between gas and electricity markets, promote cooperation with other sectors such as transport and support innovation such as renewable gases and power-to-gas technology. This increased level of interaction will need to be assessed to ensure that the future gas market is able to respond to the requirements of the energy sector as a whole. The interaction of these sectors is necessary to meet its climate change targets.
ENTSOG is working closely with its Members to develop innovative products and services to facilitate the future role of gas in the overall European energy mix and to meet climate change targets. However, these will bring challenges as well such as coping with fluctuating gas qualities with growing green gases content, framing the proper conditions for connecting decarbonised and renewable gases production, planning usage of gas grids from hydrogen and biogas friendly perspective or designing new data flows between TSOs and DSOs. Nevertheless, gas systems offer a long-distance transportation, a long-term energy storage, decarbonisation of heating and short-term demand management support tools.
ENTSOG’s Members are ready to facilitate those developments and be part of the solution.

ENTSOG launched in January 2021 an Advisory Panel for Future Gas Grids with the purpose to discuss openly among stakeholders along the entire value chain on how to transition the gas grids to net-zero by 2050. The video summarises the work done in 2021 and future steps and deliverables for 2022.
ENTSOG, GIE and Hydrogen Europe have joined forces on a factsheet that answers a number of fundamental questions about gaseous and liquid hydrogen transport and storage. This factsheet provides an objective and informative analysis on key concepts, terminology and facts and figures from different public sources.
On 8 December 2020, ENTSOG hosted its fourth annual conference online - ‘Future of Gas Grids: Decarbonisation and Energy System Integration’.

Moving towards 2030 and 2050 with hydrogen in the North of the Netherlands!
Focusing on gas innovation, decarbonisation and the coupling of gas and electricity systems, ENTSOG Members (Transmission System Operators – TSOs) presented four innovative projects. These can be found on ENTSOG’s newly updated website called ‘Innovative Projects Platform’. The conference outcomes from the event support some of the conclusions of the last 31st Madrid Forum and ENTSOG sees these ideas as an important part of the potential gas legislation review in 2020.
